Our freshly rolled oats begin as oat groats (aka kernels) from Seneca Grain & Bean, a farm in the Fingerlakes region of New York State. Freshly rolled oats are a totally different experience to oats that have been rolled and have been sitting in the grocery store. Our oats are part of Seneca Grain & Bean's impressive crop rotation and are rolled on a grain flaker by Brooklyn Granary & Mill to order. They are full of buttery flavor and natural oils; and are great for anything, including oatmeal, granola, and cookies.
Oats are naturally gluten free but ours are processed in a facility with wheat.
By enjoying and using oats, we are supporting farmers in their regenerative practices. From the Sustainable Food Lab, "By increasing the number of plants on the landscape, with barley, oats, wheat or rye growing between crops of corn or soybeans, the soil is full of living roots much more of the time. These roots hold nutrients and moisture in place. When farmers grow small grains all the way to harvest, the soil gains more organic matter. Plant diversity through extended crop rotations breaks pest cycles, reduces need for fertilizer and pesticides, improves soil health, and eventually increases yields of corn and soybeans."
